Hreinleiki er skilgreindur sem eitthvað saklaust, ómengað og óspillt og hefur löngum vegið þungt í kenningum um fagurfræði sem hefur kristallast í leit listamanna að hinu hreina formi.

Þjóðernishyggja snýst einnig um hreinleika og er mannkynssagan uppfull af atburðum þar sem þjóðernishyggja verður drifkraftur í tilraun til skipulagðrar útrýmingar á þjóð eða kynstofni undir réttlætingu hreinleikans sem, líkt og listin, byggir á fagurfræðilegum hugmyndum.

Það er þó grundvallarmunur á þessum hugmyndum um hreinleika. Annarsvegar er það hugmyndin um að ein tegund manneskja sé hreinni en önnur og sé þar af leiðandi yfir aðra hafin, og hinsvegar er það sú hugmynd að allar manneskjur séu í sínu innsta eðli óspilltar, sameinaðar í einum hreinum kjarna.

Purity is defined as something unspoiled or uncorrupted and has played a large role throughout the history of art with the artist's search for "the purity of form". But the idea of purity is also the foundation of nationalism and the history of mankind is filled with incidents where many nations attempts to annihilate other nations are justified by the idea of racial purity, which, like art, is based on aesthetic concepts.

There is, however, a fundamental difference between these concepts. On one hand there is the idea that some persons may be purer than others and are therefore dominant species, but on the other hand there is the idea that every persons innermost being is uncorrupted, and that all are united in one pure essence.
